The Institute was founded in
1946. A large contribution to its development was rendered by the
Professors of the Chemical Department of the University of Latvia as
well as by the specialists of industrial branches: A.Ievins
(Director from 1946 to 1953 and from 1959 to 1962), L.Liepina,
A.Kesans, G.Vanags, K.Karlsons and A.Vaivads. In the following years
the research work is conducted by their students and fellow members
dealing with the theoretical and practical problems of current
interest in the fields of inorganic chemistry and technology
(T.Millers, Full member of LAS, Director from 1984 to 1997;
O.Kukurs, Z.Konstants, J.Grabis, Director since 1997), physical
chemistry and electrochemistry (B.Purins, Director from 1962 to
1984, L.Maijs, V.Kadeka, A.Lokenbaha, I.Vitina and H.Krasts),
analytical chemistry and chemistry of coordination compounds, as
well as in environmental protection (J.Bankovskis, A.Sturis,
J.Svarca).
In 1998 the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Latvian Academy of Science
was reorganized and incorporated in the Riga Technical University as an
juridically independent structural unit. Designation of the Institute after
reorganization is: Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Riga Technical
University.
The Institute is associated with the Latvian Academy of Science.
